Not for me at all. But, because I am a Middle American and I FINISH what I START ill-advised home repair projects, poorly thought-out military campaigns , I finished the fucker.
This book was quite a journey. I enjoyed all of the characters and his missions and felt the book wrapped up in a really fantastic way.
It's rare that I come across someone with this much self awareness and growth. May 14, Luke Burchell rated it liked it. This book was pretty good, but way too long.
So in the spirit of being concise, I will end my review there. Nov 12, Sarah Lozy rated it really liked it. I had Brave Story on my bookshelf years before I actually read it.
I was just so drawn to the cover- the vibrant drawings and the description sounded a lot like what would be a Japanese Harry Potter. But my gosh, it's soooo long!
That very fact alone, stopped me from picking it up many a time. A I'm a slow reader. A book with pages is a challenge period. With the exception of the actually Harry Potter books, I don't think I could ever read book this thick in less than 3 weeks.
B I have OCD w I had Brave Story on my bookshelf years before I actually read it. B I have OCD where I need to finish books.
Even if I hate them! Something bothers me forever if I don't complete them Which brings me to C I was afraid to start this book because I knew it would take me forever and if I disliked it, I'd still be forced to trudge through until the end- making the reading time even longer Good news!
The book is very good. Miyuki Miyabe does an excellent job bringing an imaginative and magical world to life. You love Wataru and his companions, and are constantly rooting for him to make it to the Tower of Destiny before Mitsuru.
That all being said, I think all of the conflicting religions, governments, and beliefs could get a bit confusing at times.
I did have to reference back to previous chapters, just to make sure I understood what visions the Old God believers held versus the Goddess believers.
And there were so many characters- luckily the reader generally meets them more than once, which makes each one more memorable, but a few times I would forget the names of certain individuals, and once again have to flip back.
Of course- these could all just be my problem! I loved Kee Keema the waterkin- he was by far my favorite character.
Who doesn't love a giant lizard like man? All and all, a decent fantasy story- but even though Wataru is only in 5th grade, I might reserve this one for older kids- for the recurring themes of suicide, murder, and violent scenes.
But again- just my thoughts. Jun 18, David Ranney rated it liked it Recommended to David by: Ashley.
Mitsuru, the little boy who lost his mother and his baby sister when his dad went on a killing spree.
Mitsuru Ashikawa, the little boy who'd been next in line to be murdered. Mitsuru Ashikawa, who tried to commit suicide.
Wataru curled up in a ball on the floor. He couldn't control his shivering. His whole body should until the bookshelf behind him was rattling. So long.
Wataru knew now why Ashikawa had gone to the other world. He didn't have a place in this one. Vision was his home no Mitsuru, the little boy who lost his mother and his baby sister when his dad went on a killing spree.
Vision was his home now. Brave Story is like reading a childhood dream. It harkens back to those rainy afternoons where video games were the freedom that lifted us from the sober company of grown-ups.
It's a retreat to the familiar worlds of role playing games, more intimately understood by us in youth than the hard-hitting realities of adulthood.
But it's not all whimsy. Brave Story transcends the fairy tale in its honest portrayal of family drama, notably the devastating effect of divorce on Wataruand even more impressively, how it ripples through the community.
It's these "in between" moments, the stuff that life is made of, that really sets the novel apart from other young adult fiction.
View all 4 comments. Good character development. More philosophical than I would have imagined, but in a thought-provoking, creative, emotional, and inspiring way.
A long book, bit slow in the beginning, but well worth the read. I found it very entertaining. I'm sad to be leaving Wataru, Vision, and the adventure.
Being that I am currently struggling with personal misfortune like Wataru and Mitsuru, I find that I am strengthened to go bravely forward and embrace my future, and find happiness in all the goo Terrific.
Being that I am currently struggling with personal misfortune like Wataru and Mitsuru, I find that I am strengthened to go bravely forward and embrace my future, and find happiness in all the good and lessons from the bad, and not wallow in self pity.
I didn't expect something so profound in what I just expected to be a fun kids book. I would especially recommend this for kids and young people who have experienced any trauma in their lives such as divorce or death of a loved one, or numerous other hardships.
This book teaches values of friendship, selflessness, bravery, acceptance, and the ups and downs of life - which is something I have not found in too many books, especially one that is so entertaining, adventurous, and filled with so many awesome fictional characters like Kee Keema and Meena!
Jul 10, Chris rated it liked it Shelves: self-reflection , ya. I enjoyed this book, but I felt it was a little longer than necessary - and a little preachy at times.
I loved the characters of Meena, Kee Keema, Kutz and Wataru - the relationships they built were worth reading about and kept me invested in the story.
And the addition of the dragon, Jozo, added excitement just when I was about to give up on the book.
Wataru is a boy learning to come to grips with his parents' divorce. He finds himself sucked into an alternate reality in which, if he is successf I enjoyed this book, but I felt it was a little longer than necessary - and a little preachy at times.
He finds himself sucked into an alternate reality in which, if he is successful, he will be able to change his fate. This is an intriguing proposition for a young boy - in the face of such world changing event.
But as time goes on, Wataru realizes that he may not want to change his fate after all. Perhaps some things are more important than personal happiness.
There are times when the story really lapses into didactic language and that was a little hard to take. But the story itself was good and entertaining.
The premise behind the story was quite interesting and would give kids the opportunity to really examine why we make the choices we do - and what can happen when we make the wrong choices.
It also discusses the idea that we all have good and evil inside and that we must work to accept both. Aug 10, Woodge rated it did not like it Shelves: fantasy , abandoned , young-adult.
This story translated from the Japanese is like two stories mashed together. It begins in the real world with a young boy age 11 named Wataru.
There's some strange goings-on in a half-built house in his neighborhood and it's pretty interesting.
But then that bit gets overshadowed by Wataru's disintegrating family. Wataru wants to fix things and thinks he'll get a chance by fulfilling a mission into another world called Vision.
